We heart the Street Food Thursdays at Markthalle IX, we really do, but its success has resulted in long lines and sometimes an actual shortage of food, yikes! Suffice to say Berlin was in the market for a second Brooklyn-style street food fair, and in Bite Club it has found a worthy (if immediately also immensely popular) one.
Though it offers some of the same chefs and dishes as you’ll be familiar with from Street Food Thursdays, the vibe is decidedly cooler; there less cute kids running around, for one. Instead, I saw club kids, tattooed beautiful people, DJs on their afternoon off, a distillation of Friedrichshain and Panorama Bar that provided a great contrast to the occasionally intimidating young beach bodies on display at the Badeschiff next door.
But how was the food, you ask? Well, I got there early (and would strongly advise you to do the same), so I didn’t have to suffer very long waits for the tasty bites of chicken served by Bun.Bao or the tasty little mounds of pork from Taco Kween. Okonomiyaki Konnichiwa suffered the greatest from opening night jitters, with the delicious Japanese hangover cure only being served up piecemeal, resulting in perhaps the slowest-moving line of the night. Still, folks didn’t look too worried, the horchata cocktails seemed to be doing their job. My favorite stand, serving Paletas‘ profoundly refreshing cucumber/lemon popsicles, even had no line at all, even by the time the masses had arrived and flip-flopped lines were snaking all over the parking lot.
The location, meanwhile, is gorgeous, especially on a hot summer day like we had on opening night last Friday, with the sunset casting everyone in the very best light, especially those seated on the Hoppetosse deck, overlooking the Spree, while below decks folks enjoyed complimentary nail art from Nailinger and more drinks from one of the three different bars. A decidedly mixier affair then, Bite Club, and I can’t wait for the next installments (August 16, 30, September 13, and 27), when one of M&Gs’ rib rolls (served with crispy chips for added crunch) will be at the very top of my to-eat list.
