Discover This: Nebraska

Before the American award season comes to full bloom, we already have a winner as far as the non-existent category of best film poster is concerned: it’s the shadowy and hardly visible silhouette of Bruce Dern’s head on the beautiful poster of the magnificent film Nebraska. With his hair uncombed and thinning and his face but a mysterious line as if posing for a paper cut, this image of Dern couldn’t be more fitting for a film about a man who is very recognizable yet full of secrets, some of them part of the dark shadows of his past.

Thomas Bentz and Oliver Lührs of Achtland

Fashion in Berlin: Behind the scenes of Achtland

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin is in full swing this week, which means dozens of runway shows are held throughout the city – models walking the newest creations of German designers is mostly a mere 15mins enjoyment for the audience, but, however, a week-long, if not months-long pursuit for the designers presenting. It’s not only about creating an original yet consistent collection that will appeal to journalists looking for the newest trends and buyers looking for pieces that are actually wearable, but finding an interesting venue, casting the best models, styling convincing looks, designing an attractive setting, playing the most fitting music and having the best light etc. Most of the times, the looks are only finally defined minutes before the show starts. I joined the very promising young duo of Oliver Lührs and Thomas Bentz and their label Achtland for a short while during the preparations for their runway show presenting the new winter collection for 2014/15:

Vegan lunch at pele mele, neukölln Berlin

Vegan in Berlin: Pêle Mêle

Being vegan in Berlin might be easier than in any other German city, yet I don’t necessarily find eating out very appealing most of the times. While there are plenty of options for vegan fast food (burgers, döners, pizzas…) and at least some for fine vegan dining, Berlin’s missing out on options for when you’re neither craving trashy nor dainty, but want a healthy lunch or a modest dinner. And then there’s the problem with the locations, Mitte is so short on vegan spots it’s almost ridiculous considering its bobo population. Naturally, the café I am recommending you now is far off Torstraße down at the southern tracks of Ringbahn, a short walk from Rathaus Neukölln station.
