If you love Rianna Kounou’s colorful vintage paradise just off Oranienburgerstraße, you will most likely also love her newest adventure: she teamed up with Nina Kuhn to open a new store on Steinstraße, were they invite you into their world of gaudy fun made of beautiful pillows, eccentric bags and statement kaftans. It is certainly something else, while most shops in this part of Mitte rely on an international chic interior with moderate colors and graphic furniture, this one’s all about colors and patterns and them clashing in every possible way.
Rianna and Nina met on a vintage trade show, quickly discovering they both love vintage fabrics and scarfs and decided to open a store together. They started just several weeks ago, offering a selection of fashion and interior accessories made from vintage silk scarfs and fabrics like Ikat they source on their world-wide travels. While the bags made from those materials are manufactured in a small family enterprise in Greece, the Kaftans, pillows, lamps and Kimonos are produced in Berlin. Every piece is unique, which is why the subtitle of the store “Cabinet des Curiosites” is more than fitting. Additionally Rianna shows a selection of her vintage jewelry.
In the shop, the different patterns and fabrics are a feast for the eyes – piles of pillows, clusters of lamps and stacks of bags are arranged in front of graphic wallpapers showing colorful fish on a dark background. You might need a while to adjust to the explosion, yet it’s worth it to discover the many treasures in this shop. Although Steinstraße might not be on your usual shopping route, this little gem should convince you to frequent the street more often.
