Six Soups: to keep you warm in Winter

Delicious Ramen soup at Cocolo Kreuzberg

Soup night is my favorite night in winter, when Berlin can be so cold and grey, we tend to forget why we ever liked this city. Luckily, Berlin offers (not plenty but) enough coping strategies, first and foremost: steaming hot soups that will warm your belly and your soul and keep your mind from breaking thanks to the ice cold winds from the East. Let’s drown in bowls of soups filled with thick noodles, hearty broths and loads of flavor. Aka: plan your winter depression along this soup-route:

Tantan Ramen soup - with spicy minced meat and vegetables

Ramen Noodle Soup at Cocolo Ramen, Kreuzberg
This soup makes me happy. So very happy, I am repeatedly in awe of the magic power it yields in its super delicious broth and the many lovely toppings. Cocolo Ramen’s noodle soup has been my most important coping strategy for at least seven winters, there are no words to describe how much of my sanity I owe this eatery. I advise you to visit the noodle shop in Kreuzberg, only because it got loads more seats than the small Mitte joint and the heartbreak over not being able to indulge the soup you’ve been craving for so long because the line outside is way too long for minus degrees is just too much to take. Kimchi, Jjigae

Kimchi Jjigae at Yam Yam, Mitte
Kimchi, a Korean, very spicy, fermented cabbage (do I still need to explain?), is another of my very importing coping mechanisms in winter – and a spicy kimchi stew can help you fight any flu, believe me, and so spicy, it lets you forget any other winter induced pains. Yam Yam has a lovely Jjigae, either with tuna or with tofu. Read more here.

This list is really cheap and shows that these kind of list journalism is not working anymore. If these soups are your favorites you have to teach your taste better. Sorry!

So which six would you recommend, Harald? If you’re going to criticize someone else’s taste at least put yours out there to undergo the same judgment…

What i mean is its so easy to make a short list like this but it says NOTHING. Every soup keeps you warm in winter or you eat cold soup…

every hot soup keeps you warm indeed, but these six keep you warm and make you happy thanks to their deliciousness

I discovered Laksa soup at Neue Heimat from a stand called Kickass Noodle, they make their noodles fresh in front of you and the soup itself is amazing, I really fell in love but I don’t always want to go to Friedrichshain for soup. They should do something in Kreuzberg.
