How super is it, that Berlin’s food scene is so diverse by now, that one can enjoy a delicious afternoon pick-me-up at a Japanese bakery!? Kame just opened their shop in Charlottenburg, is part of the 10 places you have to try this winter list, and is serving some smashing sweet treats filled with Matcha and match more.
I went for a bowl of soy matcha latte and a matcha cheesecake, both so intensely green, the color alone will help you get over an afternoon low or the annoying phenomenon of Frühjahrsmüdigkeit (literally, spring fatigue), when your body tries to get over the winter slowness and into the spring fever. The cake was deliciously creamy, with just the right bitter taste one wants when ordering something with carefully ground green tea. Topped with fresh pomegranate, grated chocolate, the mousse sat atop a cookie and butter base, that was slightly salty. Perfection, if you ask me. The giant bowl of soy matcha latte gave me energy well into the night.
I was so intrigued by the display of assorted baked goods, I also got a melon pan, which doesn’t contain melon, but is a soft roll topped with chunky streusel, that give it the look of a melon… If I remember that right. Plus a roll filled with figs and walnuts, that was the perfect breakfast treat accompanying my black tea and milk the next morning.
Besides that, Kame is serving sandwiches with, for example, tonkatsu or tarutaru fish tartar, fried balls filled with vegetables or curry. And onigirazu, a bigger onigiri sandwich filled with baked salmon, or sukiyaki beef, teriyaki tempei or tamago omelette. The latter and the pans are also available at Markthalle Neun on Street Food Thursday, where they have a stand.
