Brunch in Berlin has become so good, it’s sometimes even hard to decide where to go and indulge in morning food. It almost looks like as if this guide needs an update soon. What definitely has to go in there is The Future Breakfasts new weekend brunch at Isla Coffee in Neukölln – with their breakfast menu featuring their beloved eggs benedict, but also jerusalem artichoke hummus, panzanella and – probably most important – french toast! Or Arme Ritter, as we Germans call it.
Having a bowl of hummus toped with spicy fermented tomato, garlic-herb portobello mushrooms, dukkah and two poached eggs (9,50 Euro) is certainly a lot for breakfast, especially if you can’t not have the french toast later. The easiest solution is to come with a friend and share the plates, or have a brisk walk on Tempelhofer Feld before (and maybe after). But not having the savoury AND the sweet choices would be a lost chance.
The french toast is currently served with caramelised quince, homemade sriracha maple sirup – the only component some might need a little getting used to, because it’s quite spicy – and a scoop of Gabrielle Jones heavenly cheesecake ice cream (7,50 Euro).
Other options are classic eggs benedict with homemade english muffins (very important), marinated king oyster mushrooms and truffle hollandaise (8,50 Euro); and a panzanella with garlic croutons soaked in cherry tomato vinaigrette with sautéed kale, poached eggs and pickled green jalapeno chimichurri (8,50 Euro). Everything’s vegetarian, and the menu suggests vegan replacements for the eggs like roasted sesame carrots for the hummus, king oyster mushrooms for the panzanella, for which a gluten free alternative, red and purple potato, is also available. Paired with Isla’s glorious coffee drinks, this menu just makes for the perfect nurturing morning meal.
The Future Breakfast’s brunch dishes are served on weekends from 10:00 to 16:00 at Isla Coffee.
