Coming back from Venice and the opening of the Biennale di Arte, I needed some me-time. No crowds, no lines, no waiting, no mediocre food at exorbitant prices. And found myself next to the canal early on Sunday, dropping into one of my favourite spots to have coffee and a sandwich, Populus Coffee, to discover they do more fancy brunch dishes on the weekend!
Known for their excellent coffee (and thus rightfully in my Berlin’s Best Coffee Guide) and sweet treats with a Finnish twist, this place gets loads of points for being very laid-back while serving elaborate and on point drinks and food. For example, I ordered a white tea, that didn’t arrive as a glas of hot water with a sad bag of dried leaves on the side, asking me to guess the right timing, but as the finished drink: a perfectly brewed white tea, mellow and light, with no bitterness whatsoever.
I then chose the carrot waffles with avocado cream, pickled radishes, some greens and herbs on the side, and the perfect waxy egg. A combo that’s pretty perfect with the sweet and moist waffles, the creamy avo, sour pickles and tart herbs, although I would have loved the waffles a little more baked (and made in a bigger pan to get a thicker waffle, but that might just be me).
All in all, this was a delightful breakfast, had way before the crowds by the Kanal get unbearable because everyone wants to and should hang in the sun who’s been so shy this year. Populus Coffee also has a bowl and pancakes on the menu, by the way, they looked really good. Will be back soon.
