Seriously: 10 New Restaurants You Have To Try This Spring

Berlin is, by now, a city were new food spots open every week, with some events counting over 1000 joined guests on social media. That means that this list is already old news. Since its publishing not even 6 months ago I have tried many of the restaurants on the list (and even found some of them delicious), but not all of them (yet!). However, it's spring by now, re-awakening our (my) need for fresh explorations and new discoveries. As before, these recommendations for places come from my own, personal, private (as in: subjective) to-eat-list (sorted from a-z) only based on what I've heard about these in the media and through friends. Enjoy! (Updates in italics)Dan's Dim SumWith no lesser intent than to bring the best Dim Sum to the capital, this place has been recommended to me by a very trusted source on all things Chinese, Ash Lee. While she was also quick to admit Dan's isn't that great for vegetarians, I am still hooked enough to travel north to find out what Dan means with "best".Dan's Dim Sum, Gleimstrasse 17, Prenzlauer BergdóttirIndeed, I've already announced my interest in this just-opened Scandinavian restaurant in the middle of Mitte on Mittelstraße, however, I think it's exciting enough to be included in this list. Can't wait to have a date with Victoria Eliasdottir's food.dóttir, Mittelstraße 40, MitteAs lovely as expected. And more! Read the review here.Father Carpenter CoffeeI've said it before, but I never grow tired of repeating – I love how Berliners are currently developing loads of new breakfast options after too many years of sad buffets filled with sweaty cold-cuts and wrinkly bacon being called "brunch". Besides doing pretty swan-latte-art, people say this Mitte joint serves excellent coffee and breakfast staples like Bircher Müsli and avocado toast. Maybe they've even got pancakes?Father Carpenter Coffee, in the backyard of Münzstraße 21Such smooth coffee, read the review here!gogogiI am all for Berlin's ongoing love with all things Korean, and I was especially intrigued by gogogi's cover photo for their opening event. (And the fact that restaurant openings are now able to attract 1000-plus guests on a facebook event...) Can't say much about the menu yet, but this gorgeous-looking kimchi makes me want to go!gogogi, Weinbergsweg 24, MitteHallesches HausThis one's a concept store that sells all kinds of pretty goods, but also serves coffee, tea by Paper & Tea, sweet treats like almond, cardamom caramel brittle (omg) by Black Isle Bakery (a UK bakery recently moved to Berlin) and also plans to host food events – like the next feast of breakfast aficionados "Das Brunch" on May 9th, featuring such scrumptious plates like poached egg with marinated buffalo mozzarella, star-anise confit tomatoes, spinach with rhubarb vinaigrette, avocado, thinly shaved asparagus and potato rösti (as said, omg).Hallesches Haus, Tempelhofer Ufer 1, KreuzbergWent there and loved it. Read it here.Industry StandardSonnenallee is developing into a much coveted food lane – and people have been raving about this new joint serving small plates meant to be shared. Certainly thanks to their promise to use "the whole beast" (representing Nose to Tail in Neukölln) for their cooking, with menu items like rabbit kidneys with gnocchi and sage or bone marrow with citrus, raddish and toast. And even some veggie options like a cauliflower à la Sonnenallee. I want to know what that means.Industry Standard, Sonnenallee 83, NeuköllnSetting new standards in so many ways. I've had people falling off their chairs when expressing their love for their items like green tacos with tarragon and parsley, or grilled tortilla filled with slow-cooked cochinita pibil (pork) and melted cheese.Neta, Weinbergsweg 5, MitteLovely and colorful. Its radically local and seasonal cuisine (no pepper!) can only be enjoyed in a 10-course menu featuring such descriptions as topinambour, Blutwurst and parsley – including the name of the ingredient's origin. However, the incoming reviews tell me that those short descriptions say little about the effort the kitchen puts into emphasizing each produce's own characteristic.Nobelhart & Schmutzig, Friedrichstraße 218, KreuzbergNo question, this was the best new opening of the year. Read the review here.Organic Glamour Food BarDespite the rather cumbersome name, this place is more than promising, coming from the hands of Telse Bus, who is known for being an food conceptionist– an equally cumbersome term – and has done countless food events for brands, theaters and restaurants. Her new project sounds very enticing, with dishes like chickpea ragout with baked tomato and asparagus, three kinds of hummus, bowls full of superfood soups and much more. Certainly needs to be explored further.Organic Glamour Food Bar, Veteranenstraße 16, MitteSadly (and unexpectedly), this one already shut down. I've been there once and wasn't overly thrilled, while not disappointed. It definitely was a great approach and I can't imagine a reason this one didn't work out. The Store Kitchen"The" store is not actually a restaurant, but a concept store on the ground floor of Soho House, selling international designers like The Row, Robert Clergerie, Common Projects, and the usual concept-store goods like books, cosmetics, but also include a barber, a nail salon (it's huge), and a kitchen! And the kitchen's concept sounds most attractive to me: Bite Club founder Tommy Tannock and chef Johnnie Collins present dishes that speak to my heart, cooking vegetables in all their beauty. Read: kohlrabi with cucumber, radish, nori, feta and rice vinegar dressing, or lesser celandine (never heard before) with peas, endive, hazelnuts and Saint-Maure goat's cheese. Soon enough there'll be a full kitchen with even more options. I've already heard enough, I wanna go there. Now.The Store Kitchen, Torstraße 1, Mitte.Seriously great lunch, can't wait to see what they're coming up with next – read the review here.
