Berlin’s Best: Breakfast Guide Part 1 – Quick & Easy

This guide was a long time in the making. I have repeatedly said that Berlin is not living up to its name of being a “breakfast-city”, while umpteen places offer breakfast, only really few manage to make a good one. However, my ongoing laments had an effect the current change in the food scene has yielded fruit in the morning meal department – so much, in fact, that I had to divide this guide into two parts. While the epic and indulgent breakfast experience is coming up, this part is presenting you options for when time is limited. But that doesn’t mean you’ll have to lower your expectations when it comes to taste and satisfaction. There are a lot of places quickly serving you food that will give you a great mood for your day.

Berlin’s Best: Hot Dog

We weren’t sure how you, our beloved Berlin audience, would react to a (slight) change of plan – instead of grilled patties past Saturday’s Burgers & Hip Hop was dedicated to the wiener packed in a bun and topped with all kinds of stuff: the hot dog. We felt like it was finally getting the attention it deserved and brought along seven dog-lovers to show their craft. They served their inventive creations to a delighted crowd from afternoon till late night. And you returned the love by voting for one of them in the “Berlin’s Best Hot Dog” competition. Read on to find out which dogs were brought, who won the coveted trophy and find out more about the secret to Berliners’ foodie-hearts.

Korean in Berlin: Madang

This recommendation comes with a bit of a catch, because this is not a place you can just go and order anything. Some items on the menu are delicious, some are surprisingly bland. And while I am usually the first to rule a place out because of inconsistency, the dishes that are made well, are so good, you won’t find them anywhere else in Berlin… Like the Doengjang Jigae, a stew made of Korean fermented soy-bean paste.

Lunch in Kreuzberg: Hallesches Haus

Hallesches Haus, that gem in the wastelands around Hallesches Tor, just opened their shiny and bright new restaurant area. Twice the size of their shop and beautifully lit by a skylight, it’s obviously as beautifully decorated as the rest of the shop: Prouvé lamps hanging over giant Nuts & Woods oak-steel tables, many thriving succulents on used wooden sideboards, tiled floors and speckled enamel lights. With the new space comes a full, open kitchen, where they are preparing simple yet delicious lunch bites, sandwiches, cakes and cookies.

Coming Up: Burger Feast / Hot Dog Edition

So it’s not like we’re over burgers, not at all. But to keep the love fresh, we’re taking a time-off to kindle with another burning fast food favorite: the hot dog. Taking over our favorite club Prince Charles – Burgers & Hip Hop is coming back as Hot Dog & Hip Hop on October 3rd! This hijack has been coming a long time, Berlin has recently been taken over by a new crave for hot dogs and we highly appreciate that. We will feature the finest doggs in the city and of course we’re celebrating the burger Hot Dog Feast! Read on to find out more about the pre-sale ticket that gets you all the doggs!
