His body seems dead and his limbs are motionless as the waves of the ocean wash him up the shores of an unknown island. He is wearing sneakers and Adidas pants, his hair is fashionably shaved at the sides and dyed platinum blonde. On his slim chest his name is tattooed in bold black latters: KASPAR HAUSER. It’s the year zero and once in a while UFOs pierce through the blue sky.

Life can be fast and sometimes it takes less than 80 minutes for a newborn to become a pensioner. The baby that was just lying on the blanket in the middle of the room starts to crawl in the next shot and then walks out of the door before it will have grown into a young girl that calls her daddy on her toy phone. The teenage girl will be a young woman, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a widow and her story will be told through 68 different women. No man will ever be visible.
I was on a fishing boat when I lost track of time and space. The dark swallowed me and night turned into day. I didn’t know whether I was sick or healthy, dreaming or working, whether I was hallucinating or wide awake. I became one with the ocean and its creatures which I killed every day. Its ghosts followed me from above and beyond, from up and down, from inside the water, and inside the boat. I had met Leviathan.
The image of an abandoned church has high symbolical value. When the camera gets sight of the central aisle where people once prayed, we hear police sirens ring outside and discover big pools of rainwater on the floor, shimmering from the reflections of sunlight. Like in Tarkovsky’s Stalker, we seem to smell the decay of the post-apocalyptic, but are quickly reminded that we are still in the here and now.
The humans are watching something. It is not quite certain what they are watching, but as they are drawing and looking at their object in art class, highly concentrated, it must be a model. It actually is a model, but what the humans are drawing is not a person, not a live model, but an animal. A stuffed deer is their model, and this brilliant exposition already tells us what this film, Bestiaire, is all about: producing images of animals.
