This is a market I wanted to visit for ages, but most of my Saturday mornings’ aren’t for making plans or fulfilling duties and thus it has taken me a while to cycle down to this small but beautiful farmers’ market in the heart of Kreuzberg. And what a gem it is, despite it featuring only about 20 or so stalls, the selection is well made, making it possible to do all your grocery shopping here, including a lunch and very fine coffee. Last week we had the pleasure of savoring another round of “Berlin’s Best Bread”, tasting sourdoughs, toasts, and multi-grain breads from the finest bakeries in the city to find the most delicious of them. A carb-feast celebrated by a jury of bread-lovers, with samples from artisanal bakeries judged in two categories by many criteria and loads of discussions. In the end we had two winners, however, almost all of the submitted baked goods were of very good quality. So while you enjoy reading the following ranking, keep in mind that all of the bakeries are worth a visit, pursuing traditional and artisanal bread baking. Sadly much of Germany’s bread baking tradition has been lost and most bakeries you’ll find in Berlin sell warmed up dough pieces that merely deserve to be called bread. Luckily, there have always been people working on keeping delicious bread without artificial additives or chemistry tricks a staple in German households. The past years have spurred a new interest in artisanal breads and some brave people took the chance and started new bread businesses.
