Do you remember those moments as a child when you stepped into the forbidden realm of your mother’s wardrobe when she wasn’t home? I used to love trying on her shoes and running my hands over all the different textures and fabrics, in awe of her collection of silk, fur, and tweed that spanned multiple fashion decades. My mother (bless her soul) always kept designer pieces from her twenties and thirties that she couldn’t bear to throw away. Much to my dismay, my waistline and my feet turned out to be two sizes bigger than hers, rendering it impossible to inherit her treasures. Despite this crushing adult realisation, it is this whimsical childhood memory that swept over me when I entered Soeur. The charming décor, the colour-coordinated hangers of clothing, and the rows of perfectly aligned shoes brought me back to a time when I wished that I could wear it all.
It is not often you find a second-hand shop that doesn’t require hours of your time to sift through rows of tatty and over-worn clothes to find something special. Through her tireless and expert sourcing, Nina Schröter, the owner of Soeur, has removed this hassle so you can easily navigate through her selection of pre-owned goodies. Her personality also exudes from the quasi-parisienne interior: vintage lamps, retro furniture, and timeless decorating pieces all have her unique touch. It is obvious that a large amount of thought and consideration has gone into setting up the shop. What instantly caught my eye, and what would soon become my favourite piece in the store, was the fire-engine red cash register that sat proudly on the front counter.
This small but fine vintage boutique is every fashion aficionada and label-hunter’s delight. Inside, you will find plentiful Isabel Marant, Marc Jacobs, ACNE, and Chloe (to name only a few). Be forewarned though; given the condition and high quality of the brands, prices are not thrift-shop comparable. This is not a Garage equivalent, where you can walk away with kilos of impulse purchases that will likely end up at the bottom of your drawers. At Soeur, you’ll only find well-preserved one-offs that show no visible signs of age or wear—perfect for those who want to expand their collection of designer treasures without the harsh price tag of buying them brand new. Here you can easily snap up a pair of meticulously maintained vintage Prada heels or a Dries Van Noten dress for only a few hundred euros.
If vintage accessories are your vice, there is a neatly arranged glass counter with a plethora of retro frames and jewelry—not to mention the large the selection of bags, belts and scarves that are just waiting to be taken to back a good home, loved, and -ideally- ultimately passed on to the next generation of fashion lovers.
