Food in Berlin: The Breakfast Market

Berlin breakfast, breakfast in Berlin, The Breakfast Market, food in Berlin, Markthalle Neun, Big Stuff Smoked BBQ
Big Stuff's Breakfast Sandwich coming straight out of your dreams.

I’ve said it before and I’ll says it again – against all prevailing expectations – Berlin doesn’t have a great breakfast-scene. Besides the usual croissant with coffee, there’s basically only the mixed plate filled with more or less unremarkable cheese, fruits and spreads. I am exaggerating, obviously, but only because the end of breakfast-tediousness is near! The guys of Markthalle 9 came up with a fabulous new idea: The Breakfast Market. So fabulous indeed, that without any promotion (besides some printed flyers), the event already attracted 2,800 morning-eaters to click “attend” on Facebook.
The market will happen every third Sunday of the month, starting this Sunday, June 15th, and will go on the whole day from 10:00 till 18:00.

Lucky me, I got a very early preview on what the market has to offer in terms of early-day-dishes and I can already tell you it will be a feast. You better go easy on that Saturday-night-dinner because it will be packed with delicious options from hearty pork belly to light wheat grass. But take a look for yourself:

It is very likely that the longest lines will be seen in front of Big Stuff Smoked BBQ with people drooling for their breakfast sandwich (pictured above) with raw milk butter and pickled celeriac, stuffed with pulled pork, pork belly bacon and topped with a soft poached egg and embraced by a Sironi bun. Enough said.

Unusual breakfast options: delightfull Korean congee.

Mr. Susan on the other hand will offer a lighter option to start your day with a typical Korean breakfast dish called Congee with a Berlin twist. The rice porridge with soy been sprouts is topped with homemade corned beef and kimchi, shallots, mushrooms and what looks like a tomato but is actually a kimchi-ed radish. Very exciting and unusual, yet very worth trying. And so healthy!

Will cure all your pains: Hopp Schwiiz’ Rösti with Raclette cheese.

In case you’ve been out the night before and need to calm down your stomach after a bit too many vodka-drinks, Hopp Schwiiz will help you out with their delicious Rösti with Raclette cheese and various toppings. Sounds super heavy and it certainly is, still it was so good I couldn’t stop devouring my Rösti with rosemary and chili cheese during the tasting this morning (with temperatures already reaching 31 degrees Celsius).

But wait, there’s even more! Mitte’s breakfast heroes will all be there: Mogg&Melzer and Meierei will have stalls as well as 3 Minutes, who will offer their eggs Benedict and Croque Monsieur, Two Planets will serve you bagels, there’ll be Latin breakfast arepas filled with plantanes, avocado and beans, Funk You will have their juices ready and as said, wheat grass shots are available as well.
In case that doesn’t convince you because you just don’t eat in the morning, let me tell you that there’ll be a plethora of non-food stalls offering porcelain, knives, enamel, and many other reasons to stay a bit longer.

This weekend will be delicious.

As always, beautiful write-up! Contemplating a late run to the market, even if just to see if absolutely everything is sold out. If not this week – soon. Thanks for the tips of where to eat.

Sounds wonderful! In terms of breakfast Germans do have some need of Horizonterweiterung. Looking forward to go some time.
