Soup night is my favorite night in winter, when Berlin can be so cold and grey, we tend to forget why we ever liked this city. Luckily, Berlin offers (not plenty but) enough coping strategies, first and foremost: steaming hot soups that will warm your belly and your soul and keep your mind from breaking thanks to the ice cold winds from the East. Let’s drown in bowls of soups filled with thick noodles, hearty broths and loads of flavor. Aka: plan your winter depression along this soup-route:
Ramen Noodle Soup at Cocolo Ramen, Kreuzberg
This soup makes me happy. So very happy, I am repeatedly in awe of the magic power it yields in its super delicious broth and the many lovely toppings. Cocolo Ramen’s noodle soup has been my most important coping strategy for at least seven winters, there are no words to describe how much of my sanity I owe this eatery. I advise you to visit the noodle shop in Kreuzberg, only because it got loads more seats than the small Mitte joint and the heartbreak over not being able to indulge the soup you’ve been craving for so long because the line outside is way too long for minus degrees is just too much to take. Kimchi Jjigae at Yam Yam, Mitte
Kimchi, a Korean, very spicy, fermented cabbage (do I still need to explain?), is another of my very importing coping mechanisms in winter – and a spicy kimchi stew can help you fight any flu, believe me, and so spicy, it lets you forget any other winter induced pains. Yam Yam has a lovely Jjigae, either with tuna or with tofu. Read more here.
Udon Noodle Soup at Daruma, Wilmersdorf
Can there ever be enough recommendations for delicious Japanese noodle soups? There can’t, indeed. Daruma is serving thick Udon noodles in a slightly fatty broth to make your stomach very happy. Read more here.
10719 Berlin Wilmersdorf
Sup Rau at Saigon Green, Charlottenburg
Not every winter-soup needs to be thick and fatty, your frozen self will be delighted by the fresh greens, tasty broth and slippery glass noodles served at my favorite Vietnamese place on Kantstraße. Read more here.
Lentil Soup at Lasan Restaurant, Kreuzberg
This soft red lentil soup is here to save you from freezing on Kotti. Dip the very fresh bread from their own tandur oven into the smooth soup and enjoy your heart’s sigh of relief. Read more here.
Chinese Noodle Soup at Do De Li, Charlottenburg
Look at this gigantic bowl of soup! And the mountain of noodles! And all the small dishes with delicacies that are about to rejoice in the hot broth bath! You know this will make you happy: read more here.
