On an especially chilly July Saturday, I found myself in a cute little café on a quiet side street of Schillerkiez in Neukölln, browsing the breakfast menu after an hour of play on the Tempelhofer airfield with the dog. And while usually my appetite goes for chia pudding, poached eggs, or loads of avocado and other things on sourdough bread, this time, I was actually in the mood for a classic, German breakfast. Yeah, it was surprising to me too, after so many years of calling for extravagant morning food creations, I craved the simple dish with assorted cheese, jam, fruits and veggies. Easy to explain though, I grew up like this. And I was lucky to be at No58 Speiserei when the nostalgia hit me, because they do the classic so very well.
No58 Speiserei is a vegetarian, vegan and, if you want, gluten-free café with a very enjoyable breakfast and lunch menu. Their breakfast menu features goodies like scrambled eggs – with pumpkin seed oil, or avocado, or vegan as tofu scrambles –, Bircher Müsli, yoghurt and granola, and is served all day. For lunch, they’re reviving the classic German Stullen, slices of breads with various toppings, as well as soups and salads. But as said, I wanted the vegetarian Frühstücksteller, a mix of house made spreads, cheese, chutney, veggies, peanut butter, jam, fruits and bread (10,90 Euro), plus a cappuccino with milk from Brodowin. Thing is, this classic German breakfast is so simple, every ingredient needs to be fresh and of quality. You need to plate them so they neither run into each other, but are also working as a group, portion size needs to be right so you can try it all, but don’t wanna be rolled out of the café. This café has all this down and I especially enjoyed the unexpected peanut butter and apple sticks, as well as the tofu spread. My friend went for the equally delicious scrambled eggs with avocado, and we both had a happy morning feast.
It’s one of those side street cafés you can actually spend hours at, if you in the end decide to leave, don’t miss the small store next door, English Traders, selling cute house hold items, gifts and a beautiful selection of kitchen towels.
