Now that Sweethearts’ final weekend is here, I want to give you an alternative in the same area, that is equally delicious and creative: Isla – a pretty speciality coffee shop on the gritty corner of Hermannstraße and Columbiadamm. With an eye for sustainability, they’re striving to reach a harmonious business by reducing waste and creating holistic production cycles. Which makes their brunch only better, that is – the bread pudding is made with left-over kouign amann and left-over steamed milk is turned into ricotta. And did I mention they’re doing it in a really pretty way?
After a short period of The Future Breakfast running the kitchen, the head chef now is lanky Yannic, who likes to bake eggs into a slice of sourdough and serve it with dukkah and chili mayo, or top ratatouille with scrambled eggs and goat cheese. Sounds about right for me.
I enjoyed a beautiful plate of sourdough bread, topped with white bean spread (with just the right hint of garlic), a fruity tomato jam with crunchy walnuts, two perfectly poached eggs, and decorated with pickled, pink onions. Very much instagram-ready while being utterly delicious, which is the more important part of the story.
And obviously couldn’t leave without at least tasting a small portion of the bread pudding with kouign amann – the latter being a delight fresh or as pudding, and baked by Albatross, a fairly new whole-sale bakery which also delivers its goodies to places like Distrikt Coffee, Oslo Kaffebar, and 19 Grams Chaussee amongst others.
All in all, Isla is a delightful and friendly place – whether it’s for their weekend brunch (from 10:00–16:00), or a quick cinnamon bun and coffee in the week.
