A weekend of heavy and delicious over-eating is coming up, let me tell you that – because before you’re heading for burger heaven at Burgers & Hip Hop’s Smoked Meat Special, you’ll have to join the feast that is the seasonal morning food celebration Das Brunch. It’s the tenth edition, and maybe even the last? This time, it’s happening in a former freight depot turned center for arts and culture, ZK/U, in Moabit, it will definitely be a feast for the eyes and your palate, with brunch dishes that fuse Australian, German, and Middle-Eastern flavours – read on for a droolworthy menu-preview!
As always, the team behind Das Brunch, led by sisters Sophie and Xenia von Oswald, are all about fusing mixed influences into dishes – Sophie and Xenia grew up in Australia with an Iranian mother and a German father. They are creating new dishes and recipes for each Das Brunch, developing new flavours and combinations to satisfy all your cravings. And here are this time’s three versions:
The Popyeye – an organic poached egg is accompanied by streaky bacon, feta & dill croquettes, roasted cherry tomatoes, sorrel pesto, baby spinach and candied walnuts (12 Euro). You can make this one even more indulgent by adding a special preserved lemon & chili sausage, created together with The Sausage Man Never Sleeps.
Then there’s the vegetarian The Gilligan’s Island, with an organic poached egg, chili-baked ricotta, spiced caponata with barberries, pistachio dukkah, broccolini, coriander & lime gremolata, baby spinach, and candied walnuts – which is what I’ll be eating because caponata, barberries, and pistachio dukkah (11 Euro). And I’ll probably add some feta & dill croquettes.
Not to forget, The Love Boat, a vegan dish with Persian breakfast dhal, roasted carrots, lemon-cauliflower cream, crispy shallots, green chili, lime, basmati rice crisps, baby spinach, and candied walnuts (11 Euro).
All dishes are topped with sumac and fresh herbs, and come with a choice of sourdough bread from The Bread Station or gluten-free bread from Jute Bäckerei.
By the way, you can always add more to your dishes, from the croquettes to sausages, more bacon, the every present avocado, or even more eggs. And if you haven’t had enough yet, enjoy a serving of Olive’s Delight, American-style pancakes with creme fraiche, sour cherry syrup, raspberries, and shaved dark chocolate. I know I won’t be able to not have that…
There’ll be a Kettle One Bloody Mary Kitchen and a Pimm’s Bar, Fjord Coffee Roasters will provide the coffee, Ruth Bartlett is going to pimp the place into a cosy brunch lounge, and there’ll be DJs playing morning music well into the late evening. Everything you need for the brunch feast we all deserve after four weeks of rain. See you there!
As per usual, everything’s on offer until sold out, it starts at 10 and will last late into the evening with some fine tunes and drinks. And as I mentioned, it might be the final one, since Sophie and Xenia are actually looking for a permanent space and want to focus on the search and concept for that one. So better don’t miss this!
