2016 has been a very long year, and oftentimes not a pretty one. And it still has four days left, so I won’t bid farewell too soon (to not give it any ideas!), but it’s about time for my annual report of what’s been most popular on this very blog. Because for the very limited world of this humble blog, it’s been a good year. Not only did we celebrate ten years of it: first with a lavish birthday dinner, and then with a grande breakfast market, but there was also the second edition of The Map, a very successful third clothing donation rally, loads of fun times at Burgers & Hip Hop, and a dessert-only extravaganza. I’ve enjoyed it a lot to be able to work on this outlet describing Berlin’s greatness, and am more than proud that enough people are interested reading my musings.

In case you’re familiar with my Instagram, you probably unfollowed me three weeks ago when I was posting too many stories and pictures of me and friends relaxing at a gorgeous spa, basically lavish exposure of extensive spa-ing in the middle of a random week. But let me tell you more about this wondrous place about 1,5 hours South of Berlin, tucked away in the picturesque biosphere reserve Spreewald. It’s a stunning spa hotel called Bleiche.

Dressing for Berlin winter ain’t easy – one rarely wears enough layers, and colors seem to be very hard to come by. The streets of Berlin are swamped with people in black coats over anthracite sweaters and grey pants. And yet, wearing some colorful winter attire can actually make your day a lot better. Which is why I’m advocating for more reds, blues and, yes, pink with this outfit.
Usually, this is a blog about food that is prepared for you instead of by you. But I’m about to make an exception for a very good reason: Luisa Weiss aka The Wednesday Chef has published a new book called “Classic German Baking” and it’s a true beauty inside and out – an extensive collection of traditional German baking recipes, tried and tested, and adapted to the non-German reader. I visited her in her home to test one recipe with her, that’s very important to me. It’s a German christmas cookie staple, super delicious, and surprisingly easy to make: Spekulatius.
How does this sound for your Saturday breakfast: poached egg, bacon, haricot beans with leek, kale and herbs, haloumi-parsnip fritters, Persian saffron shakshuka with black beans, marinated chickpeas, saffron hollandaise, charmoula marinated beets? Because, yes! It’s that time of the year again!
