On this particularly pretty July day, I’m sharing with you a new list of places I wanna try in the next weeks, when finally summer is rolling in again. Some exciting locations opened their doors in the past weeks, manifesting Berlin’s spot on the international list of culinary destinations – from long awaited ice cream parlors, to even more local and seasonal dishes, Berlin is by now offering something for almost all flavor profiles. As usual, I’ve not eaten at these places yet, but what I know of them is promising enough to put them on my list. On an especially chilly July Saturday, I found myself in a cute little café on a quiet side street of Schillerkiez in Neukölln, browsing the breakfast menu after an hour of play on the Tempelhofer airfield with the dog. And while usually my appetite goes for chia pudding, poached eggs, or loads of avocado and other things on sourdough bread, this time, I was actually in the mood for a classic, German breakfast. Yeah, it was surprising to me too, after so many years of calling for extravagant morning food creations, I craved the simple dish with assorted cheese, jam, fruits and veggies. Easy to explain though, I grew up like this. And I was lucky to be at No58 Speiserei when the nostalgia hit me, because they do the classic so very well.
The news about the situation of refugees in Berlin are still coming in, but they’ve slowed down. The situation has been calming down for several months now, since less and less refugees arrive in Berlin. Not because there are none, but because Europe closed its borders. Here’s a summary of what’s been happening in the last weeks and how you can help.
For my first trip to Japan, I decided to keep things simple – instead of doing the very popular route from Tokyo to Kyoto, Osaka, Hakone and back, our travels focussed on Tokyo, where we stayed for most of our time. I wanted to save Kyoto and Osaka for a second visit, with more time for each. But what I didn’t want to miss was staying at a Ryokan in the countryside. But where? There’s an abundance of choices, from high-end to casual, with Fujisan-view or nestled at its feet, I didn’t know how to decide. When a trusted friend recommended Satoyama Jujo, telling me their kitchen’s focus are the many edible mountain plants surrounding the place, I was instantly smitten. And this ended up to be one of the best hotel experience ever.
Thing is, I didn’t really like donuts. At least the type I knew, which was made by the big orange and pink D, who formed my idea of what a donut is a bit too much. When several people urged me to try the donuts of Brammbibal’s Donuts some time last year I was seriously like, “Nah, thanks, I’m good”, in the beginning. But then! I tasted one and since then I’m a devoted member of Team Donut. Team Brammibal’s Donuts, that is. I wouldn’t wanna risk my newly found love with a quick cheat. Here’s why…
