Bullys Bakery used to be one of my favs, before it seemed like the owners kinda got tired of gastronomy and just let things slide, turning the once pretty corner café into a whatever place with a less than impressive menu. So it was probably the right next step for OG-Bully to move back to South Germany and hand the reins over to Behzad Karim-Khani und Achille Farese, known from Lugosi bar and Karloff (aka, my favourite Italian restaurant in the city). They renovated and updated this prime location, upped their coffee and cake game and created a place I’m happy to put back on the map.
As announced in the “The New Food Spots We Have To Try” article, Five Elephant has ventured from Kreuzberg and into the heart of Mitte, opening a small but very pretty new shop on Alte Schönhauser Straße, just next to high scale fashion and beauty stores. They’re offering their well known and trusted coffee drinks, as well as cakes in newer, probably more Mitte-appropriate sizes. A great addition to the thriving Berlin coffee scene.
Usually, this is a blog about food that is prepared for you instead of by you. But I’m about to make an exception for a very good reason: Luisa Weiss aka The Wednesday Chef has published a new book called “Classic German Baking” and it’s a true beauty inside and out – an extensive collection of traditional German baking recipes, tried and tested, and adapted to the non-German reader. I visited her in her home to test one recipe with her, that’s very important to me. It’s a German christmas cookie staple, super delicious, and surprisingly easy to make: Spekulatius.
Kaffee und Kuchen is an important German tradition, so over Easter, we took to the outskirts of Berlin to have what the internet called the best cake in Brandenburg. Kaffeehaus Morgenrot is located in Hohen Neuendorf, which is technically not Berlin anymore, but still reachable by S-Bahn. Housed in a beautiful Gründerzeit mansion, they’re bringing Viennese coffee culture to the north, not only with cake but also with the many versions of Austrian coffee, in seriously good quality.
