Are you frolicking in the sun while reading this? Reveling in the great expectation that is a long, free weekend with tons of sunshine and warm weather? Ohh, me too! Nothing quite like Berlin awakening from six months of depressing grey and remodeling itself into the green oasis we all love and need. After ten days in Shanghai, where I ate excellent food from morning till night (guide still to come), I’m readjusting to the local circumstances by being extra careful where to exchange money for food. So this one’s mostly old faves (plus a new highlight all the way at the end of the post). Starting today, I’ll be on the lookout for new food spots, and will let you know about the success of my discoveries asap, hopefully. Until then, enjoy the weekend!

My food experience of the last weeks feels a bit scattered, to be honest. For one, there’re so many new places I haven’t been to yet and can’t seem to make it. Either because they’re inconveniently located, or they’re too new to trust. Most times I dunno whether they’re really worth the investment of getting out of my house in the low-light season where all I wanna do is go to bed around 4pm. So instead I’m listening to podcasts while trying to finish that annoying diamond painting showing a tentacle-haired woman holding a squid (not joking, message me if you wanna see) until it’s a reasonable time for bed (9pm). No worries though, I do get out of the house to get some pizza, some Korean food, some Italian groceries, classic Japanese and to join the feast of feasts as a preview for what is going to be the next season of rightfully praised Das Brunch. And in case you’d rather stay in right now – how about you check your closet for coats and shoes to donate at my annual clothing donation event called Warm Up? It’s happening next Sunday at Markthalle Neun and you should all come. (If you have nothing to donate, still come by and buy a lottery ticket).
A weekend of heavy and delicious over-eating is coming up, let me tell you that – because before you’re heading for burger heaven at Burgers & Hip Hop’s Smoked Meat Special, you’ll have to join the feast that is the seasonal morning food celebration Das Brunch. It’s the tenth edition, and maybe even the last? This time, it’s happening in a former freight depot turned center for arts and culture, ZK/U, in Moabit, it will definitely be a feast for the eyes and your palate, with brunch dishes that fuse Australian, German, and Middle-Eastern flavours – read on for a droolworthy menu-preview!
My, it’s been too long already. Almost four months since we had the chance to feast on the excellent brunch dishes of sisters Sophie and Xenia von Oswald at their crowd-pleasing Das Brunch event. For the spring edition – happening on April 1st – they moved north to Wedding’s Silent Green, a former crematorium, now landmark turned arts center and café. I’m delighted to present you the menu, that has everything we waited for so many winter months: Asparagus! Fresh spring greens! Rhubarb! All served with a heavy load of Middle Eastern delicacies like the tart Sumac spice, green chili paste better known as Zhough, cardamom, chickpeas, star anise. And a super special extra appearance of the much beloved Fine Bagels’ Challah French Toast.
2016 has been a very long year, and oftentimes not a pretty one. And it still has four days left, so I won’t bid farewell too soon (to not give it any ideas!), but it’s about time for my annual report of what’s been most popular on this very blog. Because for the very limited world of this humble blog, it’s been a good year. Not only did we celebrate ten years of it: first with a lavish birthday dinner, and then with a grande breakfast market, but there was also the second edition of The Map, a very successful third clothing donation rally, loads of fun times at Burgers & Hip Hop, and a dessert-only extravaganza. I’ve enjoyed it a lot to be able to work on this outlet describing Berlin’s greatness, and am more than proud that enough people are interested reading my musings.
