Giant savoy cabbages are growing in a hidden backyard in the middle of Mitte, just next to chard and herbs. They already harvested the kale, we were told by the lovely waiter, who took her time to explain us the concept of this new place, that can rightly be called gem. I know the location from when it used to house a somewhat “Alpine” restaurant and some of the most intense theater and art world parties about five or six years ago. Now it’s home to a new cooperation between furniture brand Buchholz and the guys behind Lokal and Kantine – and their new Laden is both stunning and delicious.

It’s weird how some restaurants that are clearly on my list of all time favorite places in Berlin never appeared on this site. Maybe it’s because I take them for granted? Or maybe it’s because I expect you to know them all and thus consider it not necessary to “introduce” them? But well, it’s about time I at least express my love for this Mitte restaurant serving local and seasonal dishes. It’s my go-to place if I want to make sure I’ll have a nice, affordable and delicious meal in a pleasant and pretty atmosphere. It’s one of these places that rarely, if ever, disappoint.
We already took you for a walk around Prinzessinnengarten almost two years ago – and needless to say, it’s still one of our most favorite places in this city: what used to be an abandoned and almost forgotten lot right in the middle of Berlin has turned into one of the most popular urban gardening projects with international acclaim. It’s a great place to plant and harvest your own fruits and vegetables. (If you ever tried to grow your own food, you’ll know how much joy it brings to take care of, let’s say, a small radish – when at first, you only see the green but then it gets bigger and then there are more and more of until you’re running out of ideas for recipes including radishes) But it gets even better: what makes us come back again and again is their magical garden in the middle of the planting beds where they’re serving a delicious and super-healthy lunch.
Many of the eateries I recommend on this website are my personal favorites where I repeatedly spend my lunch breaks and dinner times. I mean, this is kind of self-evident, but it isn’t necessarily reflected in the content of this blog, since a review’s usually a one-time-thing. This is why I decided to revive some recommendations with a photographed revisit. This time it’s Kantine Neun, the more than wonderful lunch institution in Berlin’s culinary mecca Markthalle IX.
I never in my life thought I would be writing about a restaurant, but sometimes you just discover the fun in something while doing it. I have also never really been a food person to be honest and when my friends ask to “have dinner” with me I always roll my eyes thinking that this is the kind of shit rich people in New York do. You know, like the women from Sex and the City who hardly work but always make it to the openings of the hottest new restaurants in town.
