Escape: Forsthaus Strelitz in Late Summer

As many of my readers know, I love me an Ausflug. Especially when combined with a delicious menu served on a picturesque farm. There are not a ton of options for that around Berlin, unfortunately, but we do have one exquisite destination: a family-run restaurant and farm business in Mecklenburg, close to Neustrelitz. It’s everything city people imagine the countryside should be: remote (but easy to reach), pastoral (and small enough to still be scenic), and rustic (while actually pretty stylish). My first visit to Forsthaus Strelitz happened almost two years ago in the height of winter with snow and frosty temperatures. The garden had loads of brussel sprouts and kale, and all the animals, including the lovely donkeys, sported their plushiest winter fur. This time, I came at the end of summer and stayed in their newly renovated cottage just next to where the sheep and goats rest.

Escape: Forsthaus Strelitz

When one lives, works, and breathes in Berlin it’s easy to forget that this miraculous monster of a city actually sits in the center of a quite pastoral landscape, with loads of lakes, fields, and forests. And a gorgeous farm-to-table restaurant in the midst of Mecklenburg’s woods. Here, instead of serving plain old Schnitzel with potatoes and gravy like so many country inns, chef Wenzel Pankratz is creating unpretentious and elegant menus centered around the quality of the produce they grow. We spent an evening, night, and morning in this picture-perfect paradise, and you should too.

Escape: Hessenburg

I love the countryside around Berlin, down to the Spreewald and all the way up to the Ostsee. However, if you wanna stay the night, things get tricky: most hotels don’t match the beauty of the surrounding nature, to put it politely. If you agree, you might be feeling the same joy I did when I discovered this gem through a lovely email sent to me by a landscape architect who highly recommended the Kranichhotel close by Stralsund as an escape destination. I clicked the link and floored I was. Couple weeks later, I packed my dog, jumped in the car and headed north to find the most beautifully renovated mansion in the middle of nowhere.
