One of my favourite openings of the year was without a doubt Kin Dee, the Thai restaurant under the direction of head chef Dalad Kambhu and restaurant manager Moritz Estermann that took over the space of renown Edd’s in the spring. From the start, Dalad made a point of focussing on the strengths of her home country’s cooking: fresh, high quality ingredients and intense herb & spice mixes. That’s why she rather uses local produce like kohlrabi or radishes than imported veggies, and makes all her pastes in house. And much to my delight, she also included plenty vegetarian dishes from the beginning. By now, six months after opening their doors, there’s a full on vegetarian menu with many new dishes, that I can very much recommend. And for all you non-veggie friends out there: the meat and fish options are seriously delicious as well, my fellow eaters usually drool over the confit octopus with Kaprao sauce, some of them saying it’s the best they’ve ever eaten.
Breaking the rules twice this week by recommending you another place that is not even officially open right now… However, I want you to join in the fun early, in a phase where this new restaurant is still figuring out its menu, its specialities, and directions. Because the food is supreme – and you might also know it already. Because the head of the kitchen is Dalad Kambhu, who served some of the best Thai food during a two-week-pop-up at Mitte’s dottir last summer. After its success, Dalad now found a permanent home in the kitchen of the former Edd’s, now Kin Dee in Tiergarten, where she’ll be cooking Thai food with a local twist, using local vegetable instead of imported ones, and pushing the concept of Thai food into an even fresher, of-the-moment direction.

Berlin is a grand city, but rarely looks like one, admittedly. While I mostly love its small town appeal, sometimes one needs to actually see and feel the attraction of a metropolis. I’m thinking about a backdrop of actually high buildings, a mix of shops and cafés and maybe the view on a zoo, preferably the “monkey hill”. Wait what? Yep, entirely possible at Bikini Berlin.
This new place on Potsdamer Straße is stemming from the Mitte café, which used to be one of the first beautifully styled cafés in that part of town and quickly gained popularity with the hip crowds back when it was still hard to find a hot porridge with toppings or an artisanal sandwich, which must’ve been around 2009 or 2010… Anyway, they have a new spot in an area that was surprisingly devoid of chic spots to eat and drink until a couple months ago, and they do what they do in Mitte: serve dainty lunch fare, cakes and coffee in a very good looking interior.
Berlin might be ever changing, but some spots are here to stay: Konditorei Buchwald has been baking its well-known specialty, Baumkuchen, since 1852—not only for Berliners, but lovers of all things sweet worldwide, seeing as they regularly ship these cakes to Japan and the US. Shaped like circles or parentheses, the staff refers to their Baumkuchen as a pyramid cake. The dough is rolled onto a spit of sorts that slowly turns over an open flame, creating fine layers upon layers baked in turn and forming a beautiful tree-ring texture that’s sealed with apricot marmalade.
