Although many of you might know this blog as a source for hunting down Berlin’s Best Burger, a have-to-eat-list of the best ice cream and elaborate bread tastings, what is actually also close to my heart is healthy vegan food. Not so much the vegan fast food, which seems to be had on every corner of Neukölln and Friedrichshain (granted, stellar exceptions exist), but the delicious clean vegan food. Not only am I trying to push the popularity by doing my superfood breakfasts at Markthalle Neun, but also by collecting reviews of the nicest places for vegan food in Berlin. And one of them is finally on the blog: Café Vux.
As it lay there before me in all its glory, I couldn’t help but remember the words of one foursquare-review, which called those bulging bundles newborn-sized. Wrapped in an almost white corn tortilla, white paper and nicely resting on a white plate with a slice of lime, the visual association easily crosses one’s mind. I mean, look ath the results of a short google picture search for “Burrito Baby”…
Tales surrounding this Neukölln burrito bar are heard throughout the city: eulogies of their delicious food as well as struggles with their inconsistent opening hours and at times impossible waiting lines. And finally I made it there (tried before, it was closed), to the place where the best Mexican food is served. And it’s vegan!
I am so very happy about the growing vegan scene in Berlin – we already got many options to chose from, but can there ever be enough?
Yesterday I cycled down Weserstraße, that incredibly long stretch in Neukölln, where new cafés, shops and restaurants seem to open every week, to reach one of the recently opened contenders: Let it Be. The small eatery serves vegan crêpe and gluten-free galette with sweet or savory fillings, burgers and sweet treats to health-conscious people coming here from all over the city.
I don’t even know if this is a big announcement or not, but I do know that only few things are able to make me as nervous as this new idea. Spending my days discovering, watching, testing and writing about all the foodie-endeavours happening in Berlin right now, lead me closer to this idea of trying out my own food-idea. The best place to try it is the upcoming Breakfast Market and so it will be: Mary’s will premiere this Sunday at Markthalle 9 and we will probably go down in a green smoothie chaos… but at least we’ll have fun!
