Oranienstraße is the prominent street that is crowded with people searching for drinks and fun at night, and hundreds of hungry working lot looking for a good lunch during the day. Hence the street is filled with restaurants, cafés and bars. Many of them rather unspectacular and living off circumstance that people have to eat somewhere. And then there are the little foodie havens, which I enjoyed to discover since we moved our office to this part of Kreuzberg. One of the first places I went was Anaveda, and I have loved it ever since.
Vegan spots are on the rise, not only in Friedrichshain. This little deli is located just off Mauerpark in Prenzlauer Berg and thus makes the perfect vegan alternative, and despite calling itself a haven for all vegan junk food lovers, its offered dishes are a lot more healthy than your usual vöner.
Being vegan in Berlin might be easier than in any other German city, yet I don’t necessarily find eating out very appealing most of the times. While there are plenty of options for vegan fast food (burgers, döners, pizzas…) and at least some for fine vegan dining, Berlin’s missing out on options for when you’re neither craving trashy nor dainty, but want a healthy lunch or a modest dinner. And then there’s the problem with the locations, Mitte is so short on vegan spots it’s almost ridiculous considering its bobo population. Naturally, the café I am recommending you now is far off Torstraße down at the southern tracks of Ringbahn, a short walk from Rathaus Neukölln station.
If you’d ask me, when it comes to vegan food, Berlin still has a lot to do. Yes, there’s the wonderful Veganz with its two stores, and there’s the delicious Goodie’s delis (who just opened their fifth joint in Schlachtensee, but is not thinking about Mitte or Kreuzberg…), and then there are the gazillion vegan burger or burrito places, but if you’re not at all going for this fast vegan food, it can be difficult.
But what am I talking about, there are possibilities, and one very fine for a delicious 100% vegan dinner is Lucky Leek.
One of my favorite spots for a super healthy lunch is Goodies*, a vegetarian and vegan deli with by now four locations in Berlin. Its home base lies on Friedrichshain’s Warschauer Straße, while its outlets are housed in the stores of Veganz in Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain, as well as in the gigantic Globetrotter store in Steglitz.
