Berlin's Best Sourdough Bread: 2018
Were you already waiting for this one? I certainly was getting impatient! However, thanks to a bit of scheduling kerfuffle, it took a bit longer to assemble a powerful jury for this years' Berlin's Best Bread competition. For the fifth time, I invited a number of local artisanal bakeries to submit their best bread to find the most delicious crusty crust and crumbly crumb in all of the city. It took us three hours of non-stop tasting to judge all seventeen submissions and crown the winner in three categories. Read on to find out who won, you might be surprised!

I decided to write "one of those articles", a boiled-down list of my current favorite places to eat in this very city.
Berlin's Best: Cinnamon Bun
Coming out of this years' Berlin's Best Bread competition, where the line-up of breads made only with sourdough was so high in quality, we were all surprised and very excited about the state of bread in Berlin. So I decided to hold another competition of a baked treat that I and many others love dearly: the cinnamon bun! This idea was pushed by the fact that the cinnamon bun, kanelbullar, or Zimtschnecke seemed to be everywhere – a trend I explicitly welcomed. So I called some trustworthy bun-thusiasts to join me in the quest of finding the bestest bun in town. However, the outcome wasn't what we expected.
Berlin's Best Bread: 2017
First of all, before I even begin to summarize our annual Berlin's Best Bread competition of 2017, I have to say that bread in Berlin has become so much more diverse compared to when we started in 2013 – back then, we only found few bakeries who used only sourdough as a leaven, making bread in an artisanal, small-scale way. Today, more and more Berlin bakers choose exactly this method, that, while not being as predictable and thus controllable like others, makes for individual and high-quality loafs. Because the proofing of the dough is more sensitive than with other rising agents, the baker needs to give it more attention, and I believe this creates a closer bond, a better understanding of what makes bread. So, finally, we were able to ask only for sourdough-breads without yeast or other helpers for our annual tasting in the goal to find Berlin's tastiest loaf.

2016 has been a very long year, and oftentimes not a pretty one. And it still has four days left, so I won't bid farewell too soon (to not give it any ideas!), but it's about time for my annual report of what's been most popular on this very blog. Because for the very limited world of this humble blog, it's been a good year. Not only did we celebrate ten years of it: first with a lavish birthday dinner, and then with a grande breakfast market, but there was also the second edition of The Map, a very successful third clothing donation rally, loads of fun times at Burgers & Hip Hop, and a dessert-only extravaganza. I've enjoyed it a lot to be able to work on this outlet describing Berlin's greatness, and am more than proud that enough people are interested reading my musings.
Berlin's Best: Coffee Guide 2016
The very first version of this guide on Berlin's best coffee, published four years ago, featured nine places, the updated version from two years ago had fifteen. And this one? Twentynine! When everyone thought the Berlin coffee scene had reached its climax and was saturated, coffee enthusiasts actually took another leap and made the scene here bigger, better and especially more beautiful. And while it seems like the whole city is covered in speciality coffee places, a look on the map (choose coffee from the drop-down menu on the left) makes it very clear how much spaces are still left untouched by syphons, speciality roasts and the never-ending discussion whether one should or shouldn't use sugar.In this guide, I collected all coffee places I enjoy in Berlin, from the chic caffeine chapels to the homey neighborhood joints, from the ones who've been here before you even thought about moving to Berlin, to those who literally just opened. Just to make sure you’ll get a good coffee wherever you are.
The Best Places in Berlin: A Map 2016
After a year (and since the first edition is sold-out), it was time to seriously update my beloved printed guide to this city – to not only cover all the new opening times of my long-time favorites, but to finally include all the new additions – twenty-six new spots to be precise, which pushes it to 98 best places in Berlin in total! To honor this update, Alexandra Bruns developed a new design, with new colors, and a new glossy cover – while we kept all the things that proved to work so well: the format, the folding, the categories. Berlin's Best Bread: 2016
It was about time for a new endeavor in the land of carbs: last week, a bread-loving jury came together in my office in Kreuzberg to taste the finest baked goods in the city, celebrating sourness, judging crumb as well as crust and talking grains, flours and sourdough. We broke the bread, spread butter, dipped in oil and even toasted some of them, to find Berlin's Best Bread, this year in four categories, which means we have four winners! However, all of the bakeries we invited are glorious examples of artisanal baking, an endangered trade, so make sure you buy your bread with them when looking for real good one.
Six Soups: to keep you warm this winter
It's minus way too many degrees out there, and while the snow is looking lovely and crisp, and the sun is doing its best to keep the vitamin d flowing, it's just incredibly cold. So who wants soup! I do! Every night, to be honest. Bowls, bowls, all kinds of bowls. Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, Turkish, Korean, whatever broth, noodles, veggies, pastes, I'm in!Here to save you from freezing, are six of my favorite soups in the city.

2015 is over, my friends, time to take a look back on what this year has accomplished. While the big picture is quite depressing, a smaller, more local picture, maybe one limited to the food-related parts of life, actually makes a good one – Berlin's food scene has definitely grown beyond all expectations, the number of new openings made it hard to follow, but the old players definitely had something to add to the game as well. 2015 was in fact so packed with food experiences, it makes me almost scared for the coming year, how's one supposed to keep up?! I don't expect this food-evolvement to end very soon – Lucky us & Guten Rutsch!
Berlin's Best Burger: All Stars
I'm kind a lost for words describing the party we had past Saturday, not only did we celebrate the 2nd anniversary of your favorite party – Burgers & Hip Hop – at Prince Charles with the best burgers artists of the city,burger macarons, two burger pinatas and a stunning new trophy, but received over 900 votes to find Berlin's Bestest Burger ever. The ultimate battle of all our previous winners turned out to be hot as hell. Find out who won, here!
Berlin's Best: Hot Dog
We weren't sure how you, our beloved Berlin audience, would react to a (slight) change of plan – instead of grilled patties past Saturday's Burgers & Hip Hop was dedicated to the wiener packed in a bun and topped with all kinds of stuff: the hot dog. We felt like it was finally getting the attention it deserved and brought along seven dog-lovers to show their craft. They served their inventive creations to a delighted crowd from afternoon till late night. And you returned the love by voting for one of them in the "Berlin's Best Hot Dog" competition. Read on to find out which dogs were brought, who won the coveted trophy and find out more about the secret to Berliners' foodie-hearts.
Berlin's Best Burger: Tropical Edition
Oh what a day and night we had – hot and humid, sweet and spicy, devouring and dancing. Eight burger artists came together for Burgers & Hip Hop in the backyard of Prince Charles to celebrate tropical patties and exotic add-ons like grilled pineapple, coconut slaw, bourbon pickles, mango salsa and fried plantain.Besides savoring those treats and shaking those bums, we were there to find the new bearer of the much coveted Berlin's Best Burger trophy. Using a new voting system, where each visitor had a chip to vote for the best while the pre-sale Burger Feast tickets included a double vote, we got more votes than ever and a result that might (or might not) surprise you!

Aww, what a day and night. Burgers & Hip Hop's spicy edition was so hot, everybody was happy about the heavy rain cooling us down. Which didn't end the grilling, of course! The burger artists brought so much extra hot chili, piri piri, jalapenos and hot sauce and you all dwelled in the pain.. didn't you?However, you ate burgers all night long to find out who's making the hottest one in town, so read on to find out the result…
The Best Places in Berlin: A Map
Many times I've considered the idea of assembling a best-of list comprising my absolute favorite Berlin spots. Yet instead of writing up a listicle, we once again left the safe paths of the web to move into the thrilling field of print. It took some paper wrangling and some heightened discussion over the merits of one location over another, but now that it's finished I am very proud to say: the map is here!
Berlin's Best Bread: 2015
Last week we had the pleasure of savoring another round of "Berlin's Best Bread", tasting sourdoughs, toasts, and multi-grain breads from the finest bakeries in the city to find the most delicious of them. A carb-feast celebrated by a jury of bread-lovers, with samples from artisanal bakeries judged in two categories by many criteria and loads of discussions. In the end we had two winners, however, almost all of the submitted baked goods were of very good quality. So while you enjoy reading the following ranking, keep in mind that all of the bakeries are worth a visit, pursuing traditional and artisanal bread baking. But for now, let yourself be surprised who won this year's "Berlin's Best Bread"!

Soup night is my favorite night in winter, when Berlin can be so cold and grey, we tend to forget why we ever liked this city. Luckily, Berlin offers (not plenty but) enough coping strategies, first and foremost: steaming hot soups that will warm your belly and your soul and keep your mind from breaking thanks to the ice cold winds from the East. It's so lovely to watch Berlin grow as a foodie-city and enjoy its rising fame and the fruits of a decade-long development. 2014 has been an especially good year for food in Berlin, not only because I discovered new favorites and cherished old time loves, we enjoyed great food festivals, listened to kitchen tunes and watched new initiatives bloom, but because you, the readers, have developed an even bigger craving for recommendations and then showered the reviewed places with loads of love making their effort worthwhile. 2015 holds new promises, but let's rest for a moment and praise the stars of the past year with a list of the ten most popular food places of 2014.
